Michigan couples whose marriages are coming to a premature end might wonder if their careers have played a role. Some professions are linked to a significantly higher rate of divorce, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.

For people familiar with the stress and danger experienced by people in the military, it may not be surprising that the highest rate of divorce was experienced by first-line enlisted military supervisors. These military personnel lead operations and coordinate enlisted military members and their activities. Other military careers also rank among those most likely to get a divorce, including tactical operations and air weapons personnel.

Overall, jobs in the military held three of the top 10 places in the ranking. People in the military in general were the most likely to divorce before the age of 30. There are a number of reasons why divorce is more common among military personnel. The risk, danger and stress of military careers can play a significant role in the dissolution of a marriage. In addition, military deployments and long-term separation pose a divorce risk for many. Many members of the military marry at an early age and must move frequently around the country, two additional factors that also escalate the level of stress on a marriage. Across the country, around 41 percent of first marriages end in divorce. While the average age for people to who split up is 30, the number of older couples divorcing has actually escalated in recent years.

Regardless of occupation, the end of a marriage can present a variety of legal issues. People who are facing a divorce might want to discuss their concerns about property division, child custody and alimony with a family law attorney who has experience with these types of matters.
