Working together to benefit the children after a divorce

On Behalf of | Jan 11, 2017 | Divorce

When Michigan parents are going through a divorce, it is important that they agree to put the best interests of the children first. However, it can be easy for parents to lose sight of this. As such, it is for the best if some parents can work together to come up with a plan to ensure that the children come first regardless of what happens during the actual divorce.

Unless there are extenuating circumstances, it is often best for the children if the parents can co-parent. This means that the children have the ability to maintain relationships with both their parents and that the parents do not have to miss out on their kids’ childhood. Creating a plan can help. For example, if parents can work together, they can create similar rules, rewards and disciplinary actions. This way, the children always know exactly what is expected of them and get to see their parents work together.

To make co-parenting easier, parents should be able to create a written plan. This plan should be created during the divorce process. It should outline how parents can handle a situation if the child custody agreement is somehow violated. A dispute resolution process should also be included in the event something unforeseeable happens.

If couples who are going through the divorce process have kids, a divorce attorney may assist with finding a resolution to any custody disputes. This may include with creating parenting plans. If the parent does not have primary custody of the child, an attorney may work out an agreement for the parent to have visitation. The parenting plan may also allow the parent to be involved in holidays and school functions. If the other parent prevents the parent from maintaining a relationship with the children, the attorney may return to court to change the child custody agreement.
